Been there, nearly done that.
It’s tricky. The road might have enough traction to go faster that what the car ahead of you is doing. But that little space between the lanes can be more slippery than the travel lane, and the middle of the lane (between the wheels) gets slick too. This makes lane changes very delicate maneuvers.
Sometimes the right lane has been plowed, but the left lane is still covered. Of course, the car ahead is going unnecessarily slow, but the condition of the left lane prevents passing. I’ve even seen times when the left lane got plowed first, and all the slow traffic clogs it up.

He crashed, he just didn’t hit anything.

I was the truck this morning, second snow of the year but no one remembers how to drive in it. A Saturn with no lights on and only the wipers cleared went to slow down in front of me an locked them up, 180 into the (empty!) right lane. I went by while they were trying to get turned around.

That’s the most annoying part. The right lane’s plowed, the left isn’t, and someone has to slow down to 40 or so in the plowed lane. You have to slow down and get over, then spend way more time passing than you want to because you’re driving in unplowed snow and they’re driving on plowed pavement and are both going basically the same speed. Finally get passed them, speed back up and hit another car or line going slow again. Repeat until destination.
